Waste Not, Want Not (Any shrimp!)

O.K. So I love shrimp too! I'm not asking you to give it up for life but you may find a good reason to steer clear of the shrimp special at Red Lobster this month!
For your May challenge, say NO to shrimp!
WHY??
Most of the shrimp come from developing countries which is causing environmental problems. Shrimp that are caught with nets destroy the seabed and scoop up whatever lies in its path.
For every kilogram of shrimp caught, 10 kilograms of dead fish, turtles, and other marine species are discarded.
There is hope of course! There are other fish in the sea!! Find out which ones are your best choices and which ones you should avoid at http://www.seafoodwatch.org/. Print up a pocket guide to keep handy when you're at the grocery store.

Let me know what green choices you're making this month and send a message on the blog.

thanks for the info, i especially like the pocketbook seafood guides that I got through the monterrey aquarium website.

I wish Canadian aquariums were more informative.

Goans are big seafood lovers, and especially like shrimp...so perhaps someone can invent mock shrimp? Who knows.

Hi,

Interesting... but the problem is more on how we will be abale to feed 8 billions people in a couple of years! all that food have a real impact on earth... especially where the environment is not the real issue. I'm fighting agianst GMO since a long time, because they say is a answer to it... Bullshit! GMO it's just a cancer. Monsanto want manage the complete food market, and they help country in development to make them slaves.

Everything is inter-related. I can't help but wonder what our boycotts will do to the poor people who catch shrimp, sew under garments, break up old ships, etc. Are there ways we can start at the top instead of the bottom?

No comment on the shrimp but with spring finally here and many of us working on our gardens. It's important to remember that fertilizers can cause extensive damage to our planet.

The traditional products on the market may seem like the best thing for your garden but lets face it, what's better than worm poop?? Check out the link.
