1-0 for the Big O!!

For the month of April add $10 to your grocery bill and buy organics. Then make it a habit, that's only 33 cents a day to make the world greener. Take a look at the organic section at your local grocer, it should be growing as does the demand. Price differences are decreasing. By adding only a few dollars at each visit to the grocer you can buy a variety of fruits and veggies and even milk or butter once a month.
Did you know that organic milk is naturally higher in Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins E & A and certain other antioxidants?
Organic foods keep our planet healthier, you and your kids healthier and animals healthier.
For more reasons to go organic check out www.organicmeadow.com, www.organicfoodee.com
And for a fun must-see video check out www.storewars.org
Don't forget to check where your food is coming from! If your organic blueberries have travelled across the planet to get to you, then that may not be such a green choice. Consider buying food that hasn't travelled so much and when the season arrives, splurge on local fruits and berries.

Tips for a low-toxin pregnancy
• Avoid any renovation in your home that disturbs old lead-containing paint (generally painted before 1970).

• Reduce your exposure to aluminum by not using aluminum pots or cookware, and don't use deodorant or antiperspirant containing aluminum.

• Have any dental work done well in advance of pregnancy and look into the possibility of replacing any amalgam fillings you may have with non-amalgam alternatives.

• If you're decorating the new nursery, use plant-based paints with low fumes. Avoid using solvents and fume-emitting adhesives. Better still, talk someone else into doing the hard smelly work. Milk your "delicate" situation for all it's worth!
• Avoid hair-colouring products during pregnancy. Most have health warnings on them advising against use by pregnant women.

• Eat organic food wherever possible. At the very least buy organic broccoli and grapes in place of non-organic broccoli and grapes. Broccoli and grape crops tend to make high use of pesticides. They also have a large edible surface area, which increases the amount of pesticide residue you finally eat.

• Limit your consumption of tuna, fish that dwell on the sea floor and shellfish.

• Eat free-range, organic chicken and eggs. Non-organic chickens are often fed synthetic hormones and antibiotics to improve their growth and avoid diseases. Exposure to synthetic hormones can confuse the development of the reproductive organs, while the antibiotics in the chicken and eggs can depress both the mother's and child's immune systems.

• Use green cleaners.

My tip for buying organic is to get it free at Dominion / A&P with their "Fresh or Free" policy. There is less turnover with organic products because not as many people buy them. Therefore, it is easier to find yogurt, milk, cheese, butter, etc... that is past the best before date. For those who have never done "Fresh or Free" the store keeps the past date product and you get a fresh one for free! There is nothing like getting a $9 pound of organic butter for free!

I think organic is especially affordable if one becomes vegetarian. But being vegetarian, even ovo-lacto vegetarian requries lots of descipline and I'm not quite there yet. As for veganism that is a very futuristic concept for me! I'm still in the reduced-meat diet phase. But reducing meat intake is very cost-effective for both your wallet, the environment, probably your health, and it makes buying organic veggies more affordable.

Fast-food vegetarian food is hard to find, especially organic food which is associated with slow wine and dine food.

Anyway, I was suprised by KFC's brand of veganism. I don't know if it is organic or not but wow! what a sudden breakthrough for both the environment and for animal rights!

They have coupons you can download so if you are on a busy schedule you can tempt yourself. Its only in the Canadian KFC, stores. The American ones still have to change. Its probably not organic, but as far as I am concerned its a welcome change in the fast-food industry.
